More Photograms

I made some more photograms this week in Photography. I am really happy with how they turned out. Here they are!

This next one is a bit different.

Making photograms is a slightly confusing idea but in a nutshell, when you expose light sensitive paper to light, the light sensitive particles in the paper react. In order to see that reaction, you have to emerge the paper in a developing solution. Once in the solution, whatever areas were struck by light turn dark and whatever areas were not hit with light remain white.

So I made this reverse sort of image
by exposing the entire piece of paper to light, dunking my hand in the developer and then smacking my hand on the paper and spritzing some of the developer around. So, only the areas that I allowed the developer to touch turned dark. If I had put the entire paper in the developer the entire thing would have turned black, because I exposed the entire page to light. I loooove it and I wish I had a chance to make more!

A Picture of Sorts/Fall Update

Its been a while! I have to admit, I have had a grudge with computers since taking my two online classes over summer. However, I am slowly warming back up to them, so here I am! I am enduring the fall semester at the moment and started my fourth week this morning (only 11 to go ;). I am two units over full time so I have had my hands full but I am enjoying my classes. My classes are: Cultural Anthropology, Criminology, a Sociology course concentrating on social problems, Nutrition (an elective, and online) and last but not least, Photography (also an elective). I am really enjoying them.

In photography we are working on our first assignment: photograms. Photograms are made by placing objects onto light sensitive
paper, exposing it to light and then developing it. The areas that were struck by light are black. Here's my first batch. By the way, that white spot appearing in all of them is dust on our scanner or something, its not really there.

I am starting with the one that came out the worst (according to my expectations). Oh, and if you click on the photo, it should get larger.

There was detail in the fabric strips that I was trying to capture but the fabric was to thick to allow for it.

This one is alot more simple. I am pretty happy with it. It has also given me some ideas for next week.

This last one is kind of fun. The round things are those little smashed marbles. They were different colors so they came out with different tones of gray.

We are going to make a few more next week. Then, we have to turn one in to be graded. I am happy cause now I have a better understanding of what works. I am looking forward to getting to make some more next week.
